What made Václav Havel the man he was?

When Václav Havel was granted the rare honor given to a foreign statesman to address both houses of the US Congress, the space filled to the last seat, and this frail, diminutive man who spoke in his halting voice and imperfect English, received a standing ovation. We had goose bumps and knew we were in the presence of greatness. What was it that was responsible for the phenomenon “Václav Havel”?
