Siemens and Arab sheik among recipients of Czech EU grants

Czech state-controlled power major, German multinational giant Siemens, Škoda Auto and ArcelorMittal are among the large corporations which have received EU funds allocated to the Czech Republic within the framework of various EU programs. Siemens for example has received Kč 326 million since 2007 towards its operations in the Czech Republic, the daily Lidové noviny (LN) reported Friday.

Large fire, explosions in area of Semtex factory

At least 11 fire engines were fighting a large fire on Thursday morning at the Czech factory where the infamous plastic explosive Semtex is made. The fire broke out in the night on the premises of the firm Synthesia, which includes Explosia, the maker of Semtex. The regional fire brigade says toxic fumes have been released into the atmosphere, though the firm Synthesia denies the fire poses a health hazard to locals.

Investigators draw blank over deadly explosion at Semtex plant

Almost one year after the event, Czech investigators say they have not been able to get to the bottom of an explosion at the Explosia plant in April last year in which four people were killed. Separate shortcomings at the plant revealed by the probe resulted in a Kč 1 million fine on the company.

Greenpeace says banned hormone disrupter found in Czech river

Tests of water samples taken along the Labe (Elbe) River by the environmental pressure group Greenpeace have revealed high quantities of the hormone disrupting chemical nonylfenol at several places where sampling took place. Greenpeace says the chemical, which is banned in the EU, is used in Chinese textiles production and has probably been washed out of clothes.

Czech SEMTEX producer strapped for cash

Famous Czech explosives producer Explosia has hit a cash flow crisis after its bank UniCredit froze a credit line. The loss-making state-controlled company, renowned for its production of the plastic explosive SEMTEX, says suppliers can be paid, with a delay. The Ministry of Finance, which bears final responsibility for running the company, appears keen to hide from any immediate fallout.

Burning issues for Czech eco-tender player AVE CZ

Looking to build a large-scale hazardous waste incinerator in Pardubice at the site of a defunct one, the Upper Austrian company AVE CZ sought permission for a facility in area not zoned for such a project. The public is strongly against and the Environment Ministry gave it a negative review. But in the Czech Republic, rich investors, like the eco-tender hopeful, have a history of success.

Semtex plant explosion: 4 missing, 7 injured

Four people are missing, presumed buried in debris, following a powerful blast at the Explosia factory in Semtín, Pardubice region, at 6:45 am on Wednesday morning. Seven more have been treated for injuries sustained in the blast, mostly from flying glass. The emergency services have warned that another explosion may occur.
