Press freedom — the new EU accession criterion?

Countries that want to join the EU need to show that their democracies work well. However, press freedom — key to any pluralist democracy — is under threat in most of the countries that are now queuing for accession. Independent media are being squeezed out and critical journalists are being sacked, beaten or locked up, writes Centre for European Reform (CER) deputy director Katinka Barysch.

Anti-Semitism: Combatting an ancient hatred

Participants at an OSCE meeting in Prague on confronting anti-Semitism in public discourse have called for more decisive steps to counter expressions of intolerance and hatred.
