Czech ice hockey legend says Russian KHL is bad news but local league better

Slavia ice hockey trainer Vladimír Růžička  has hit out at the pending Prague debut of Kontinental Hockey League team HC Lev. He predicts the sharing of Prague's o2 Arena will be a technical headache for his team and the presence of the KHL team will be bad for Czech hockey as a whole. But he maintains that the quality of KHL hockey is no better than in the Czech Extraliga.

NY Rangers beat Sparta Prague 2:0

The New York Rangers won the first of their four pre-season games in Europe on Thursday evening with a 2:0 win against Sparta Prague. Both of the NHL team’s goals came in the second period. The first was put away by Anismov with a backhand from a rebound. Three minutes later Fedotenko fired in a pass across the top of the crease from defenseman Michael Del Zotto. Sparta were not overwhelmed and in the first period outshot the Rangers 13:5.

David and Goliath on ice: HC Sparta Prague hosts New York Rangers

In the 2011-2012 season, the New York Rangers are expected to spend around Kč 1.1 billion on players wages alone , whereas Sparta Prague have a total budget of Kč 110 million for the season. This is only the second time a team from the Czech Extraliga will host an NHL team and is an opportunity to compare the level of play in the Extraliga with the world’s top ice hockey league.
