“Restoration,” Israeli director Joseph Madmony’s touching study starring Sasson Gabai, won the grand prize at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) over the weekend, at which a jury led by Hungarian director Istvan Szabo awarded top prizes to 12 films from 13 countries.
While star guests like actors Judi Dench and John Turturro will light up the red carpet at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — which starts rolling in the West Bohemian spa town on Friday evening — organizers say much of the focus this year will be on first-time directors. In fact, 54 of the nearly 180 feature-length movies being screened over the nine days of the Czech film festival are debuts.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will present American actor, screenwriter and director John Turturro with the Festival President’s Award this year. Together with his wife, actress Katherine Borowitz, he will present the world premiere of the film “Somewhere Tonight,” directed by Michael Di Jiacomo, and inspired by the late Dutch director Theo van Gogh’s “06 (1-900).”
