Firms tied to North Bohemia ‘godfather’ in crosshairs after EU funds audit

The allocation of EU grants in Northern Bohemia was not carried out in line with requirements, according to an audit by the consultancy Deloitte ordered by the Czech FinMin and EU executive. Problems were found in 34 of the 35 projects examined — and calculations of the evaluation criteria were riddled with systemic mathematical errors. What’s more, sources say the winning firms are secretly owned by regional ‘godfather’ Patrick Oulický.

14 authors in search of a Josef Škvorecký Award

The 14 finalists for the coveted Josef Škvorecký Award for the best Czech work of fiction, now in its fifth year, will not walk away empty-handed — apart from the prestigious accolade of having been nominated, which for lesser-known authors can give a significant boost to book sales. Then again, who remembers who came in second? And the cash prize for the winner is a hefty one by Czech standards.

MP Šulc pulls ‘racist’ Facebook photo

Civic Democrat (ODS) parliamentary deputy Jiří Šulc, a former Czech regional governor called to task in 2008 for racist campaign posters targeting the local Romani population, has removed a photo from his Facebook page calling for the expulsion of 200,000 Roma people to Haiti, after being confronted about it by local media.
