Rise and fall of David Rath

As recently as May 14, the Social Democrats (ČSSD) could be forgiven for thinking that the doors were opening to the Straka Academy, the seat of the Czech parliament, based on the party’s strong showing in opinion polls (30 percent) at the expense of the center-right coalition. That was before regional governor David Rath was allegedly caught ‘red-handed’ taking a multi-million cash bribe home in a box, in a case linked to a partly EU-financed public procurement project.

Czech doctor to be tried for rape, sexual abuse

Czech state prosecutors have accused a prominent Prague doctor of rape and other crimes stemming from his having allegedly abused a dozen women, mainly female personal assistants, the news server iDnes.cz reported Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.

Corruption-charged Czech politician appears before peers over immunity

David Rath, the former Social Democrat health minister and governor of Central Bohemia accused of taking a Kč 7 million bribe in a far reaching corruption scandal, has appeared before a parliamentary committee which is expected to recommend his immunity is lifted for further criminal proceedings.

Greenfingers and gardening community sprout in center of urban Prague

The challenge of turning unsightly parts of the cityscape into small oases of greenery and community in the Czech capital has been taken up for the first time by a Prague architect and his project to launch an urban allotment in the industrial district of Holešovíce. While the urban gardening concept is already mature in cities as far apart as Melbourne, New York and London, Matěj Petránek’s inspiration came from photographs of the phenomenon in Helsinki.

Bikira, a 17-year-old female Western lowland gorilla whose name means “virgin” in Swahili, has been voted the biggest personality of all the creatures now roaming about in zoos across the Czech Republic — despite a very public scandal last year, when she rejected her newborn son.

Czech state organs may begin publishing contracts online this fall

A number of Czech ministries and state entities such as the scandal-ridden Roads and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD) may begin publishing all contracts with third parties on the internet as of September as part of an anti-corruption drive, public broadcaster ČT reported Monday.

Czech explosives collector dies in blast

A Czech collector of explosive memorabilia, mostly from WWII, died in an explosion after he apparently tried to dismantle once of his devices. Neighbors were evacuated and one house will be checked for structural soundness after what was at first thought to be a gas explosion.
