World number two and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová is on the verge of becoming the top-ranked women’s singles player for the first time in her short career after the current holder, Caroline Wozniacki, was dumped out of the Australian Open. Kvitová faces two rivals for the top spot, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, and must at lest equal their performance in the first Grand Slam of the year to clinch the number one ranking.
