Belarus rights activists demonstrate against Škoda

Activists campaigning for human rights in Belarus claim that by sponsoring the Ice Hockey World Championships due to be held in Belarus in 2014, the Czech car manufacturer will effectively support the authoritarian regime of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. On Thursday the activists took their message to Wenceslas Square in Prague where they demonstrated outside Škoda’s Prague office.

European human rights court condemns Czech Rep. over Roma death

Czech Police failed when they didn't protect a Roma burglary suspect sufficiently in custody and the police and legal system failed to  carry out an adequate investigation into his death, Europe's highest human rights court in Strasbourg, France, decided. It's the second decision condemning the Czech Republic in a week.

Police file for first ever prosecution of terror suspects in Czech Rep.

The Czech police’s anti-organized crime unit (ÚOOZ) has completed an investigation into eight suspected members of a terrorist cell, who were arrested in Prague and Berlin in April and June 2011. The group is reportedly linked to Jamaat Shariat — a terrorist organization that seeks to establish an Islamic state under Sharia Law in Russia’s North Caucasus region.

Siemens, Areva, among int’l firms losing ECJ appeal over Czech antitrust fines

Major international electric-equipment makers including Siemens AG, Toshiba Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Areva, and Alstom have lost their challenge before the Court of Justice of the European Union to overturn more than Kč 979 million in fines imposed on them in 2007 by the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS) for operating as a cartel.

Czech personalities rally opinion against PM’s refusal of EU fiscal pact

More than 300 pro-European Czech personalities have fired off a petition to Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas (ODS) calling him to think again over his refusal to sign up to the EU's fiscal discipline pact. They say the move was motivated by short-term internal party political considerations. The refusal lines up the Czech Republic alongside Britian as the sole EU states which rejected the agreement.

Czech fugitive Krejčíř arrested in South Africa for armed robbery

Radovan Krejčíř, a Czech fugitive and reputed major figure in South Africa’s criminal underworld, due to go on trial for insurance fraud in April, has been arrested on another set of charges — assisting in an armed robbery in Pretoria last year, local media reported.

Czech party seeks to redirect mud slinging over failed Swiss legal action

Mud-slinging over the Czech failure to take part in time in Swiss criminal proceedings against former managers of a Czech mining company that slipped from state control appears to have started in earnest. Public Affairs (VV) chairman Radek John says the ministries of foreign affairs and justice should take most of the blame — which includes the country possibly losing out on claims for billions in damages in the MUS (now Czech Coal) case.

Czechs claim int’l arbitration triumph against Swiss investors

An upbeat Czech Finance Ministry has announced another international arbitration victory, this time against a group of Swiss investors who saw their plans of a waste incineration plant, backed by Czech environment ministry guarantees, go up in smoke. The consortium blamed the state with a near Kč 5 billion claim submitted to a German arbitration tribunal.

Bavarian police report large increase in seizures of Czech amphetamines

Increasing numbers of Germans are travelling to the Czech Republic and especially Vietnamese markets in border areas to buy cheap Czech-produced amphetamines. The city of Nuremberg has reportedly become a center for the sale of the drug.
