Czech scientists, get to know this American!

Czech scientists are increasingly on the American radar: domestic research institutions now have a right to apply for grants awarded by US defense agencies, a Czech-American agreement on scientific cooperation has been signed, and an Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG) has been established at the US embassy here — and a represtentative of the grant-giving National Science Foundation (NSF) is on an extended visit.

NATO ponders austerity and US ‘pivot’

When NATO heads of state meet in Chicago this Sunday and Monday, two key worries will be on their minds. In a departure from the past six decades, the US has come to style itself as a Pacific, rather than Atlantic, power. And the Europeans are busy plundering their defense budgets in order to cope with the economic crisis. Any one of those two events alone would have a dramatic effect on how the alliance works. Taken together, they risk pushing NATO into irrelevance, writes the CER’s Tomáš Valášek.

How Hollande should handle Merkel

The election of François Hollande as French president has excited some of those who blame Germany’s emphasis on fiscal austerity for many of the eurozone’s ills. Hollande has promised to refocus EU policies on growth and employment.  But can Hollande – as he prepares for his first ever meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel – really make a difference? Maybe, if he handles Merkel with great diplomatic dexterity, writes the CER’s Charles Grant.

China shops in CEE but gives Czech Republic a wide berth

The Chinese plan to invest $10 billion in Central and Eastern Europe over the coming years in the region’s infrastructure, technology and ecology sectors. While the buying spree has already begun, the Czech Republic doesn’t figure in any plans Chinese investors have made public thus far. But ZTE and Huawei both operate on the Czech, and the planned auction of mobile services frequencies could attract China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator.

Energy efficiency: Made in Denmark, transportable to the rest of the EU?

Denmark uses energy more efficiently than any other EU member state – 60 percent of the energy per unit of GDP of the EU average. Thus it was no surprise when in January the new Danish presidency of the EU’s Council of Ministers identified a draft “energy efficiency directive” as one of its priorities. But Copenhagen’s efforts look unlikely to lead to agreement before the Danish presidency ends. EU member states like Germany and France are trying to weaken key aspects of the draft directive.

Export promotion or reality show? Minister Kuba directs

The Czech government has repeatedly declared the upmost importance and policy priority of supporting Czech exports to countries outside the EU. It is apparently concerned about the quality of services provided by the state to Czech exporters attempting to penetrate into new world markets. The reality is, however, somewhat different: it appears the prime concern is securing lucrative jobs in the state sphere and control of billions of crowns.

Former Czech senator on hunger strike in support of Yulia Tymoshenko

Former Czech Senator Vlastimil Sehnal has announced he has been on hunger strike for almost a week in support of jailed former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Nevertheless, he opposes plans by EU politicians to boycott attendance of the European football championships to be played in Ukraine and Poland saying they should instead complain loudly on Ukrainian soil about Tymoshenko’s treatment.
