ODS calls for cool down in row threatening Czech gov't

The Civic Democrats have called for their warring coalition partners TOP 09 and Public Affairs to come to their senses in an escalating row that it threatening to topple the Czech government. ODS leaders said it was irresponsible that a row sparked by comments by the controversial VV Education Minister political appointee Ladislav Bátora should put the government’s continued existence in question.

TOP 09 stage Cabinet meeting walk out, demand Bátora’s exit

TOP 09 ministers walked out of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting to protest insults to their party chairman, Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, 73, posted by Ladislav Bátora, an ultra-right adviser to Education Minister Josef Dobeš (VV), on his Facebook page. There’s no love lost between TOP 09 and VV, but the war of words might have fizzled had Bátora not made headlines over the Prague Pride gay festival.

Czech government intact. But for how long?

Last Monday’s papers were full of headlines declaring the end of the three-party coalition government was nigh. The conflict was indeed bitter, but the “gruesome end” of which TOP 09’s leader Karel Schwarzenberg spoke didn’t occur. Intensive negotiations between ODS and VV leaders took place from Monday through Thursday — without the participation of TOP 09 — alongside separate talks between PM Petr Nečas (ODS) and VV leaders. The result was an amendment to the coalition agreement, signed by the party leaders on June 30.

New Czech coalition deal gridlocks over gaming, tax

Wrangles over taxes and gaming machines blocked Czech government parties from sealing a new deal to keep them together. The smallest party in the coalition, Public Affairs (VV), is still threatening to walk out of the government if its demands are not met. That could leave the government led by Petr Nečas (Civic Democrats, ODS) without a majority — and the country facing early elections.

Coalition faces showdown over VV Cabinet seats

The fragile three-party Czech coalition government will meet to try and solve a simmering row over the share out of ministerial posts on Tuesday. The smallest party, Public Affairs (VV), wants more representation in the Cabinet after its numbers were cut but it’s not clear where places can be freed up by its grudging partners. VV’s threat to leave the governemnt and deprive it of a majority still lurks in the background.

Czech coalition threesome could break up in June

A few weeks after the coalition government recovered from its second “stroke,” it is already suffering another attack. Insiders put the coalition’s life expectancy at a few months at best — just a year since the elections in which the Civic Democrats, TOP 09 and Public Affairs jointly won 118 mandates and had a chance to form a government with a record majority in parliament, writes Petr Nováček.

Poll: Gov’t will see more turmoil, won’t finish term

The recent Cabinet shuffle has done little to restore the public’s confidence — and the vast majority of respondents think a new crisis might not be far off, according to SANEP. Few people said they felt the government would last its full term, and a majority still favors new elections to put an end to the current problems. Among the three coalition parties, the ODS was trusted the least by poll respondents.

Pack your bags and shut the door on the way out!

Although the coalition crisis has been resolved for now, top managers surveyed by Czech Position offered some interesting perspectives on whether early elections should take place. Most say there is no point, as the outcome promises to be no better than the current situation. But a few managers favor early elections, saying defective goods should be returned and misdeeds not go unpunished.

Coalition crisis far from over

Public Affairs (VV) remains an unreliable structure whose behavior is impossible to predict, the lengthy internal crisis within the Civic Democrats (ODS) has intensified, and the president has his own agenda, aimed at weakening the prime minister and ensuring his own political staying power. Against this backdrop, anything could be a pretext for another Cabinet war, writes commentator Petr Nováček.
