Czech guerilla Christmas tree project takes root in Romania

Czech artists Michaela Klakurková and Jan Žaloudek took to the Prague streets in January last year in search of discarded Christmas trees and — without seeking approval — replanted them in Kampa Park along the banks of the Vltava River. Now, their Second Chance/New Stage For Xmas Trees project has the blessing and support of the New Stage of Prague’s National Theater and has even taken root in Romania.

Opera Ball to waltz with new cultural flair

Under the patronage of Princess Norodom Arunrasmy of Cambodia, the Opera Ball on Feb. 5 is adding some cultural elements for this year’s lavish event. New organizers are focusing on fine tuning and freshening elements and are looking to expand the event’s draw beyond Czech borders.

EC calls for online ‘cultural renaissance’

The ‘The New Renaissance’ report released today by the EC outlines a multitude of issues involved in putting Europe’s cultural heritage online and recommends making the Europeana portal the central site for all publicly-funded digital material. But unlike in ‘Old Europe,’ many EU Member States in the CEE region may be hard pressed to secure resources.

Prague show revisits pair’s era-defining architecture

Věra Machoninová and her husband Vladimír Machonin were together responsible for some of the most definitive architecture of the Communist era in Czechoslovakia, including buildings seen by some as eyesores, such as the Kotva department store in downtown Prague and the Hotel Thermal dominating the skyline of the spa town Karlovy Vary.

‘Magi’ masterpiece cleaned up in time for Christmas

A very rare 15th century triptych by the Dutch painter Geertgen tot Sint Jans that has long been in the Prague Castle collection has been extensively restored and is on display with a fragment that was cut off to create a portrait. The restoration brought out the details and reflections that show the work to be an early masterpiece of Dutch painting.

KVIFF names new artistic director

Now often known as the face of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival as well as a major force behind the promotion of Czech film abroad, Eva Zaoralová has appointed Karel Och to take position. However, Och emphasizes that she will still be a very active figure in the festival.

Modigliani exhibit explores his Kupka connection

An exhibition of works by Amedeo Modigliani will also explore the works of his contemporaries, such as Czech painter František Kupka and, of course, Pablo Picasso. Modigliani died young and left behind a mere handful of paintings, compared to his peers. Many owners were reluctant at first to lend them for a show in Prague, according to the exhibitions organizers.
