For a light comedy, Die drei Pintos (The Three Pintos) poses some formidable challenges. The story is set in 17th-century Spain but played out to German Romantic music of the 19th century. The score is a hybrid patchwork, started by Carl Maria von Weber in 1821 and completed by Gustav Mahler in 1887. And the central plot point – a nutshell game of shifting identities – is an invitation to confusion.
