Credo Ventures eyes region’s tech startups

The amount of tech talent in the Czech Republic and Slovakia has caught the interest of three entrepreneurs who started venture capital firm Credo Ventures. The company set up a fund that just reached the €11 million first close.

ING: There is no such thing as a perfect hedging solution

Hedging strategies are not general and need to be adapted to each individual company and its particular area of operations, said Marge McGrath, global head of emerging markets sales with ING. However, in the new post-crisis market conditions, commodity hedging appears to be a new necessity and Czech companies might need to learn how to integrate that into their portfolio together with the currency and interest-rate risk hedging, she said.

Three law firms earn two prizes each in annual awards

Weil, Gothsal & Manges, White & Case, and Havel & Holásek did the best in the third-annual Law Firm of the Year awards. In the future, the awards may have a bit more suspense as the organizers are contemplating not telling the winners in advance exactly what prizes they won.

Puppet ČSSR gov’t, Soviets held secret talks on gas pipelines

The August 1968 invasion to crush the ‘Prague Spring’ may have stemmed from a cynical business deal between capitalist Western countries and the communist Soviet Union on the transit of natural gas. Though no smoking gun, top secret documents obtained by Czech Position lend credence to this theory, as does the fact that gas pipes originally laid out in Poland were transferred to Czechoslovakia.

Czech software maker eyes Latin America

Czech-based data management software firm Javlin is looking to move into the Latin American market, which has been overlooked by other Czech software firms. Finding reliable business partners in a new market is one obstacle. While many people in the IT sector speak English, a lot of people in middle management speak only Spanish or Portuguese.
