Czechs draft plan to secure strategic raw materials

Faced with dwindling supplies of local coal, rising raw materials prices and volatile commodities markets, the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade has prepared a plan on how to make sure local companies get the raw matererials they need. If the general principle is approved, the ministry will fill out how Czech companies can be helped to secure their strategic supplies.

AP1000 reactors ‘exceed’ US earthquake safety standards

Purdue University researchers have determined that the structural integrity of the shield building containing the main components of the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP) — the model which the company hopes Czech utility ČEZ will choose when it expands its Temelín NPP — can withstand earthquake forces more powerful than US federal design requirements.

Key oil refiner Česká raf. threatened with strike

Almost six months of negotiations between the management of Česká rafinérská, which operates the Czech Republic’s two key oil refineries, and employees on a wage rise have yet to produce an agreement. Unions will vote on Wednesday whether to accept a compromise tabled by a mediator. Union leader Jan Klimeš says employees may strike at end of June if their offer is rejected.

Czech chamber irked by nuke shutdown

One of the Czech Republic’s biggest business lobbies, the Czech Chamber of Commerce (HKČR), has warned of the multiple knock-on effects of Germany’s exit from nuclear power which will damage companies’ competitiveness. It is demanding government action once its damage analysis has been completed.

Czech minister warns of foreign pressure against nuke expansion

Czech Deputy Minister for Energy Tomáš Hüner has warned of expected German and Austria pressure to discourage the Czech Republic from going ahead with plans to build two new nuclear blocs at its current Temelín site not far from the Austrian border. The warning follows a similar demand from Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas for Germany not to interfere with the Czech nuclear expansion.

Lukoil boss says Czech refineries not a priority

Lukoil boss Vagit Alekperov says the oil company’s lack of refining facilities in the Czech Republic is preventing its further expansion here. Nevertheless, he says acquisition of a stake in a Czech refinery is not high on the agenda; Lukoil’s top priority in Europe now is to optimize production at refining facilities it already owns, consolidation in Italy and Croatia — and expansion in Spain.

VV lines up expert as Environment Minister

Public Affairs (VV) reckons it has been shortchanged of ministerial posts since two of its ministers were forced out of the Cabinet following recent scandals. It is now seeking to make up the deficit and allegedly has the Environment Ministry in its sights. The likely VV candidate for the post is the mayor of the northern town of in Litvínov, Milan Šťovíček, for whom it seems no one has a bad word.

Westinghouse expands team in Prague office

Nuclear energy firm Westinghouse Electric Company has appointed Charles L. Werner construction development director for the Czech Republic.  He is based at the firm’s Prague office in the Pankrác district in the City Empiria Building. Westinghouse is currently among three competitors to expand the nuclear reactor complex at Temelín, South Bohemia.

Czechs, Slovaks, sign Hungary up to elec mkt

Electricity companies and regulators in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary have signed a declaration committing themselves to the creation of a single electricity market by the first half of 2012. In effect, Hungary will join the coupled market already created between the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

German nuke shutdowns boon for Czech utility ČEZ

The governing German coalition’s exit plan from nuclear power, although widely anticipated, is good news for Czech power utility ČEZ, which “should benefit significantly from the expected increases in long-term power prices,” Wood & Co. analyst Jan Tomaník said, noting open support from both “politicians and the rather pro-nuclear Czech population” for existing NPPs and plans to expand Temelín.
