Klaus to pen intro for Aussie comrade in arms’ kids book on global warming

The working title of prominent Australian geologist and global warming skeptic Ian Plimer’s new book, which he told Czech Position he plans to hand over to his publisher next week, is a provocative one — “How to Get Expelled from School” — and lock step in line with a central tenant of fellow skeptic Czech President Václav Klaus (who has agreed to write the foreword to it) that the climate change issue has been driven by doctrine, not science.

Companies prospect for Czech shale gas bonanza

Shale gas has transformed the US energy market and promises to do the same for Poland by making it independent of natural gas imports, chiefly from Russia. Hopes of smaller exploitable finds in the Czech Republic have sparked foreign and local companies to file applications with the Environment Ministry to carry out research. Many environmentalists, however, will hope that they come back empty handed.

ČEZ sole carbon fat cat in European power sector

The “Carbon Fat Cats 2011” study by the UK environmental non-profit Sandbag shows Czech power giant ČEZ to be an oddity among its European energy peers. ČEZ has a huge surplus of emissions allowances while most companies in the sector — including giants like Germany’s E.ON and RWE — are running huge deficits. Generous government treatment for ČEZ, which is set to continue, is seen as the main reason.

If UN ‘blue helmets’ go green, will Václav Klaus see red?

The UN Security Council this Wednesday is set to discuss the possible expansion of the world body’s mission to keep the peace via a new environmental peacekeeping force — “green helmets” alongside the tradional blue one — which could step into conflicts caused by shrinking resources. Czech Šumava National Park turns into battleground

Czech Police and environmental activists clashed again Tuesday in what the former admit to be a losing battle to protect trees infected by the bark beetle from logging. Environmentalists say the zone was earmarked as one where logging would not take place and nature would run its course. But the Šumava National Park’s new management says chopping down the trees is needed to stop the beetles’ advance.

Gas-connected manager heads Czech energy office

The Czech Cabinet filled the awkward vacancy of head of the Energy Regulation Authority (ERÚ) on Wednesday. The new chairwoman , Alena Vitásková, has close links to the gas sector, which is not reportedly to the likes of electricity giant ČEZ. President Václav Klaus, who would soon have got more powers over the appointment, has also lost out.

Burning issues for Czech eco-tender player AVE CZ

Looking to build a large-scale hazardous waste incinerator in Pardubice at the site of a defunct one, the Upper Austrian company AVE CZ sought permission for a facility in area not zoned for such a project. The public is strongly against and the Environment Ministry gave it a negative review. But in the Czech Republic, rich investors, like the eco-tender hopeful, have a history of success.
