ČEZ appoints head of new strategy division

ČEZ's hitherto head of asset management, Pavel Cyrani, will become the new head of its strategy division, created to help the state-controlled power giant steer its way through ever greater uncertainty in the European and global power sector. The new division will help back up the blue sky piloting previously performed by trading director Alan Svoboda.

Czech EPH says not buying Slovak gas firm for Russians

CEO and co-owner of acquisitive energy group Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), Daniel Křetínský, claims his company’s prospective purchase of a 49 percent stake in Slovak gas major Slovenský plynárenský priemysel (SPP) would be a long-term strategic investment. “We’re not preparing this acquisition for anyone else including [any] Russian gas companies,” Křetínský told Czech Position.

Former Czech PM confirms bid to head heat company group

Former Civic Democrat (ODS) Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek  has confirmed he will officially stand to head the Association for District Heating of the Czech Republic (ADH ČR)on September 5. The move puts Topolánek at the center of one of the biggest business conflicts in the country. The battle pits coal companies and the firms that heat most major Czech cities over getting cheap coal supplies to heating company boilers.

Gas pipeline link to Czech border completed

Companies building two gas pipelines bringing Russian gas under the Baltic sea to European markets announced their connection on Thursday. The link between the undersea Nord Stream pipeline and OPAL landward link in Germany connects up with another pipeline, GAZELLE, being built in the Czech Republic. The links provide an alternative to problematic gas transit across Ukraine and Belarus.

Russia’s Medvedev set for official Czech visit

Official sources confirm that preparations for a visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are well underway in Prague. An early December date looks likely to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of Kremlin treasures. But the real treasure that Medvedev will be interested in is the contract (eyed by Atomstrojexport) to complete the Czech power plant Temelín run by ČEZ.

Ex-Czech PM Topolánek may take top spot at heating plant association

Mirek Topolánek, who stepped down as Czech prime minister in May 2009, may have finally landed a prominent job: The ex-Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leader looks set to head the Association for District Heating (ADH ČR). It’s a sexier post than it sounds. Among the group’s 87 members are the biggest names in the Czech energy sector — in which Topolánek has positioned himself as an expert and advisor.

Czech Export Bank extends loan to Ukrainian nuclear operator

The state-owned Czech Export Bank (ČEB) has agreed to loan the Ukrainian state-owned nuclear power plant operator Energoatom $43.7 million (approximately Kč 780 million), the Russian energy news server pronedra.ru reported Tuesday. The money will reportedly be used to acquire nuclear fuel storage facilities for the fifth reactor block of the six-reactor Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on the Dnieper River in the south of the country.

Miner NWR posts strong Q2 but warns on 2012 outlook

Prague-listed New World Resources (NWR), whose coke fuels many of Central Europe’s steel furnaces, posted Q2 results ahead of most analysts expectations with production slightly up and high prices for its production. But while NWR has still to see signs of a decline in strong demand, the mainly Czech-based mining company warns of an uncertain outlook.

Czech chief energy regulator suspects PPF of ‘blackmail’ attempt

Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ) chief Alena Vitásková says she is concerned that an article about her published in the weekly Euro, owned by Czech billionaire Petr Kellner’s PPF Group, could be part of a strategy by the investment firm to blackmail her. She says it cast doubt upon her independence and transparency in her new post while giving the impression the main aim was to “gain leverage” over her.

ČEZ ups 2011 net profit guidance to Kč 40.6 bln

Czech state-controlled power company ČEZ said Tuesday its 40 percent year-on-year drop in second-quarter net profit to Kč 6.74 billion — well below market expectations — mainly stemmed from lower power prices, additional taxes and foreign exchange losses, along with one-off gains in 2010.
