PM Nečas may cancel controversial Czech eco-tender via legal loophole

Sealed bids submitted last week by three consortia to clean up environmental pollution caused under the Communist regime remain in a safe at the Czech Ministry of Finance. PM Petr Nečas told the daily Hospodářské noviny he wants to see the controversial eco-tender scrapped, even though he doesn’t know the prices put forward in the offers, and may leave bidders in limbo to avoid arbitration.

Greenpeace: Spolana remains among most polluted Czech sites

The grounds of Czech chemicals producer Spolana — under the care of eco-tender bidder Geosan — remain among the most contaminated sites in the country, says Greenpeace, which is midway through its 14-day “Detox Tour 2011” project mapping the water quality of Czech rivers. In years past, Greenpeace focused on dioxins in the Spolana groundwater; now, mercury levels are among the biggest worries.

Foreign oil firms eye stakes in Czechs’ Čepro and Mero

Prime Minister Petr Nečas’ (Civic Democrats, ODS) government may be uncertain what direction to take the Czech state-owned oil pipeline operator Mero and oil products storage company and processor Čepro — both of which are strategic and highly profitable energy-sector assets — but foreign refiners MOL (Hungary), Lukoil (Russia) and PKN Orlen (Poland) are keenly aware of the benefits of integration.

Czech energy blueprint seeks nuclear bonanza

A draft proposal from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade to set the course for Czech energy policy for the next 50 years calls for a massive expansion in nuclear power and suggests scrapping current limits on mining brown coal. Under the draft State Energy Concept, electricity from nuclear plants could rise up to fivefold by 2060.

Graft watchdog calls for shelving of Czech eco-tender

The long-running eco-tender to clean up much of the Czech Republic’s serious pollution legacy should be stopped in its tracks, the Czech branch of corruption watchdog Transparency International said Tuesday. The anti-corruption group is calling for the government to open the three bids submitted a day earlier — but declare no winner — so that the country will not be slapped with another expensive arbitration case.

Czech ČEZ sold German miner Mibrag ‘under value’

The July deal by which Czech power major ČEZ took control of the municipal heating firm Energotrans from Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH) — in part exchange for a 50-percent stake in the German coal miner Mibrag — was not nearly as advantageous as ČEZ claimed. According to Czech Position’s sources, ČEZ’s auditors refused to sign off on the deal.

ČEZ rejects reports of wider EC probe

Reports Monday by the Czech daily Lidové noviny that Czech power giant ČEZ faced a widened European Commission probe into suspected anti-competitive practices was negative news for the company, according to Czech analysts. But the state-controlled company sought to remedy damage later saying the paper had put out a false report and no such step has been taken or is envisaged.

Czech renewables firm E4U gets full boost from IPO

Czech renewable power project investor E4U said its initial placement of 49 percent of the shares in the company as an IPO on the Prague Stock Exchange (BCPP) was fully subscribed and raised the expected Kč 94 million. E4U, which is seeking spark the take off of solar heat plants in the country, plans to tap the market for more cash once projects for investment start coming on line.

A bark beetle perspective on Šumava's metamorphosis

Almost everyone, its seems, has a take on how to manage the Czech Republic's biggest tract of forest, the Šumava National Park. Local mayors, environmentalists, current park management, and local inhabitiants all appear to be being given a say following clashes between loggers and protesters. The one exception is the bark beetle itself. Czech Position sought to remedy the situation and provide some enlightenment about the debate.

US VP Biden warns Czechs over Russian nuke contracts

US Vice-President Joe Biden made blunt warnings about reliance on Russian energy and encouraged Czechs to sign up US company Westinghouse to build new nuclear reactors in the country when he visited Prague in late 2009, diplomatic dispatches leaked by WikiLeaks have revealed. Unfortunately, previous remarks from the Prague embassy undercut some of Biden's warnings.
