Czech culture minister seeks more film incentive funds

With all the money for 2011 snappped up before the year was half over, Culture Minister Jiří Besser wants to raise the stakes for 2012

The makers of “Borgia” were among the first to use Czech filmmaking incentives. They passed off a Czech palace as one in Italy to save money.

Czech Culture Minister Jiří Besser called for an increase in next year’s level of funding for filmmaking incentives to Kč 500 million from this year’s Kč 300 million — a sum that was quickly snapped up by 24 projects from both foreign and domestic filmmakers. The program offers rebates of up to 20 percent of local spending. Experts within the industry claim that the incentives generate much more money than they cost.
